According to Lewis Lucke, former US Ambassador to Haiti, ninety-five percent of Haiti’s forests disappeared as a result of the manufacture of charcoal. The former ambassador believes that Kumar Singh’s “energy cakes” could provide a sustainable solution to Haiti’s energy needs and decrease the demand for charcoal, which Haitians use as their primary source of energy.
Singh’s “energy cakes” won the gold medal in a technology contest sponsored by the India Innovation Growth Program of IC²’s Global Commercialization Group. The program provides each winner with a chance to commercialize their product locally and globally. These energy cakes and their potential introduction into the Haitian market are examples of GCG’s role in commercializing new technologies around the globe.
