Jewel Mullen, MD, MPH, MPA is Associate Dean for Health Equity and Associate Professor of Population Health and Internal Medicine at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. She also serves as Director of Health Equity at Ascension Seton and Director of Health Equity and Quality at Central Health, the Travis County, Texas Health District. She has applied her expertise in clinical care, research, education, public health, and administration to advance policies to improve the health of all people, especially the underserved.

A former president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, Mullen served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) and Director of the Bureau of Community Health and Prevention at the Massachusetts DPH. Prior to public service, she was medical director of the Baystate Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center in Springfield, MA. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in building effective community-based chronic disease prevention programs and for her commitment to improving individual and population health by strengthening coordination between community, public health, and health care systems.

Currently a member of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee, the Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and the Editorial Board of CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report; she also is Chair of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Policies for Action National Advisory Committee.
