IC² Institute programming at SXSW 2015

This year presenters from the IC² Institute and Austin Technology Incubator will take part in eighteen events at SXSW Interactive and SXSW Edu, March 9-17.

Global Connections

Attend our session at SXSW 2015A highlight of SXSW this year is the “SX Global Connections” thread running through the Interactive and Music conferences. The IC² Institute and ATI have supported this international focus by organizing the SX Global Connections Networking Center in Salon H of the Hilton Downtown. Salon H will be the hub of many international networking events as well as four panels focusing on IC² Institute programs and partners.

Acceleration and entrepreneurship

Bart Bohn, Mitch Jacobson and Lydia McClure of ATI will preside at three exciting pitch events, the annual ATI Fast Pitch, SXSW Eco Startup Speed Pitches and Longhorn Startup Showcase. Heath Naquin will introduce the new NSF I-Corps node headquartered at UT Austin, which puts NSF-funded university researchers on a fast track to commercialize their technologies. IC² Institute Fellow Jim Butler will explore Austin’s entrepreneurial culture in a panel on Designing Austin’s Economy, and IC² Institute Fellow Bob Metcalfe will judge at a session of the SXSW Accelerator pitch competition focusing on Social Technologies.

The health and medical industry is a new focus at SXSW Interactive this year, including the launch of the SX Health and MedTech Expo at the Marriott. Cindy WalkerPeach of ATI will present at the Expo on funding for healthcare startups. Lydia McClure of ATI served as an organizer of the AustinHealthTech Pavilion (booths 515/615).

SXSW Edu

This year the IC² Institute will expand its SXSW presence to include SXSW Edu, the spinoff conference focusing on education. IC² Institute Research Director Art Markman will bring his cognitive science perspective on education to the panel Learning to Fail with Style and Grace. In the session Research, Startups, Citizens, Marco Bravo will explore what happened when design researchers, startups, and citizen-led projects were brought together in a university-sponsored coworking space.

Other events

The IC² Institute also actively participates in unofficial SXSW events timed to coincide with the conference. Lydia McClure of ATI will be a panelist at Pitch Austin, an MBA student business plan and ideation competition sponsored by UT Austin and the University of Michigan. Marco Bravo will speak at a private breakfast organized by the Embassy of Spain and will moderate a session at Casa Brasil.
