Cleantech contributes $2.5 billion and nearly 20,000 jobs to Central Texas economy

CleanTX reportThe clean technology sector contributes approximately $2.5 billion to the Central Texas region’s GDP and employs nearly 20,000 individuals in the Austin MSA, according to a new report issued this week by CleanTX and the Austin Technology Incubator.

The report projects cleantech employment in the region to grow 11.24% by 2020, as compared to 9.3% Texas-statewide and 6.37% nationally.

The report, “Economic Impact of the Cleantech Sector in the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA,” is the first study of the economic impact of cleantech in Central Texas.

The report also identifies seven specific technology areas which represent opportunities for growth:

  • renewables
  • energy storage and “smart grid” technologies
  • smart cities and resilient infrastructure
  • autonomous vehicles and connected mobility
  • water management
  • recycling and waste management
  • advanced manufacturing

The study was a joint effort of CleanTX, the IC² Institute’s Austin Technology Incubator, and the Austin-based economic research firm Civic Analytics. CleanTX is the cluster development organization for clean technology in Central Texas. CleanTX spun out of ATI’s Clean Energy Incubator in 2006 and its executive director, Kathleen Baireuther, also serves as co-director of ATI’s Clean Energy Portfolio.
